Other Events 2008:

 

      • Riverside continued the reciprocal agreement with Sikeston Public Library at $15,000 per year.

       

      • AARP volunteers offered free tax help to the public at Central and Benton libraries during February through April 2008.

       

      • A major ice storm in February 2008 closed down the library for several days at all locations.

       

      • Ended long-term photocopier lease with Ikon and began services with local company, Sheffer’s, for our photocopier needs at all branches.

       

      • Several staff members became Notary Publics to provide service to library patrons: Glenda (Scott City), Bernice (Benton), Julie and Mary Kay (Perryville), Corey Jones and Roberta Brown (Jackson) received their Notary Public certifications.  $2 will be charged for each transaction to help cover the cost of annual bonding insurance. 

       

      • Visit by children’s book author Lisa Wheeler.

       

      • Riverside Regional Library received $12,432.48 in A&E taxes on May 5 from the State.  This money to be expended only for books and audio materials before December 31, 2008.

       

      • Riverside received in State Aid money:  $12,342.55 (Cape County), $9,972.60 (Perry County), and $12,372.80 (Scott County).

       

      • June was Audio Month and anyone checking out books on tape or music CDs are encouraged to enter drawing for prizes.  Cape Girardeau Wal-Mart has donated $40 toward purchase of prizes at Scott City.

       

      • The 2008 Summer Reading Program presenters and entertainment included Disney movies, Ollie and the De Priest Puppets, Jason Lindsay, Brian Kinder, and the Missouri Conservation Department.  The Jackson staff dressed in bug costumes and were a great hit with kids and adults alike.  About 5,000 people attended the 70 programs held system-wide between May 1 and July 31. 

       

      • New hours at Oran went into effect in June 2008.  Now open 3 mornings a week.

       

      • The old leasehold improvement account at Wood & Huston was closed May 7 and three Unrestricted County Accounts were opened May 8 at Montgomery Bank.

       

      • Photo Contest during Children’s Book Week in May.

       

      • Dr Karshner gave a program on Arthritis at the Altenburg Branch in June.

       

      • Ginny Robert (Branch Manager, Oran) and Lynn Farrow (Children’s Librarian) were selected by the Missouri Library Association to present a class on the Teen Spaces Grant at the MLA Conference in October. 

       

      • The Missouri State Library presented an all-day workshop on Senior Services on October 24 at Jackson.  It was open to all library staff in the southeast Missouri area. 

       

      • An improved cash receipts procedure was instituted in June.

       

      • Riverside’s historical documents were scanned into electronic form, saved to CDs and stored offsite.

       

      • Lauren Keith from KFVS TV visited one of Benton’s storytime programs as a special guest.

       

      • User fees were eliminated at Riverside for all persons living in Cape, Scott and Perry Counties and all adjacent Missouri counties.

       

      • A Back to School Fair done by Benton Branch in cooperation with the Scott County D.A.E.O.C.

       

      • The year 2008 marked 60 years of continual library service the city of Oran.

       

      • A family magic show presented by professional magician Chris Egelston on October 25.

       

      • Celebrated National Gaming Day on November 15 with games for all ages.

       

      • A Christmas Party for Board members, staff, and their guests was held in December at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport on Saturday, Dec. 6. County Commissioners were also invited to attend.
